Selected couplets (9 of 14) of one of Ghalib's most famous ghazals, printed on pages 194 and 195. Its refrain "mere aage" (before me) carries a proud, detached look at the world.
baazeecha-e-atfaal hai duniyaa mere aagehotaa hai shab-o-roz tamaashaa mere aage
- بازیچۂ اطفال baazeecha-e-atfaalبچوں کا کھیل (a children's game, a playground)
- شب و روز shab-o-rozرات دن (night and day)
- تماشا tamaashaaکھیل، نظارہ (a show, a spectacle)
In plain English
The world is a children's playground before me; night and day a show goes on in front of my eyes. Ghalib watches the busy world with amusement, as an adult watches children playing.
ik khel hai aurang-e-sulaimaan mere nazdeekik baat hai e'jaaz-e-maseehaa mere aage
- اورنگِ سلیماں aurang-e-sulaimaanحضرت سلیمانؑ کا تخت (the throne of Solomon)
- اعجازِ مسیحا e'jaaz-e-maseehaaحضرت عیسیٰؑ کا معجزہ (the miracle of the Messiah)
In plain English
To me the throne of Solomon is a toy, and the Messiah's miracle of raising the dead is just a matter of words. Even the greatest power and the greatest wonder do not impress the poet.
juz naam nahin soorat-e-aalam mujhe manzoorjuz vahm nahin hasti-e-ashyaa mere aage
- جز juzسوائے (except, nothing but)
- صورتِ عالم soorat-e-aalamدنیا کی شکل (the form of the world)
- ہستیِ اشیا hasti-e-ashyaaچیزوں کا وجود (the existence of things)
In plain English
I accept the shape of the world as nothing but a name, and the existence of things as nothing but an illusion. A Sufi idea: only God truly exists, and the visible world is a passing appearance.
mat poochh ke kyaa haal hai meraa tere peechhetu dekh ke kyaa rang hai teraa mere aage
- ترے پیچھے tere peechheتیری غیر موجودگی میں (behind you, in your absence)
In plain English
Do not ask how I fare when you are gone; just look at the colour in your own face when you are in front of me. The beloved's blush in his presence shows she cares more than she admits.
sach kehte ho khud-been-o-khud-aaraa hoon, na kyon hoon?baithaa hai but-e-aaeena-seemaa mere aage

In plain English
You are right, I am vain and fond of my looks; why should I not be, when an idol with a mirror-bright brow sits before me? Looking at the beloved is like looking into a mirror, so of course he keeps admiring himself.
imaan mujhe roke hai to khainche hai mujhe kufrkaaba mere peechhe hai kaleesaa mere aage
In plain English
Faith holds me back while unbelief pulls me on; the Kaaba is behind me and the church in front. A picture of a soul torn between duty and temptation, between what it believes and what it desires.

(Majnun, Laila's lover)
In plain English
I am a lover, yet my gift is winning over the beloved; in front of me even Laila speaks ill of Majnun. Ghalib boasts that he could charm the most famous beloved away from the most famous lover.

- گو goاگرچہ (although)
- جنبش jumbishحرکت (movement)
- ساغر و مینا saaghar-o-meenaaجام اور صراحی (the cup and the flask)
In plain English
Though my hands can no longer move, there is still life in my eyes; leave the cup and the flask in front of me a while longer. Even when the body fails, the love of life's pleasures remains.

In plain English
He shares my trade, my tastes and my secrets; why speak ill of Ghalib? All right, do it, but not in front of me. Ghalib has the beloved defend him, and ends the ghazal with a smile.
