A ghazal from the third part of Bang-e-Dra on Iqbal's favourite contrast: bold love against cautious reason.
This ghazal is by Allama Muhammad Iqbal, from Bang-e-Dra (second printing) (1926), p. 318.

In plain English
O frenzied nightingale, your cry is still raw; hold it in your heart a little longer. Feeling must mature before it is spoken, or it has no effect.

pukhta hoti hai agar maslahat-andesh ho aqlishq ho maslahat-andesh to hai khaam abhi
In plain English
Reason becomes mature when it weighs gain and loss; but if love starts calculating, it is still immature. Caution is a virtue in reason and a weakness in love.

لب بامlab-e-baamچھت کا کنارہ (the edge of the roof)
In plain English
Love leapt fearlessly into Nimrod's fire, while reason is still standing on the rooftop, watching. The allusion is to Abraham, who was thrown into Nimrod's fire and did not waver. Love acts; reason only observes.

In plain English
At the messenger's word, love is already quick on its feet in action, while reason has not yet understood what the message means. Love answers a call immediately; reason is still interpreting it.

زناریzunnaariزنار پہننے والا، بندھا ہوا (wearer of the sacred thread, one who is bound)
In plain English
Love's way is freedom and shaking up the world, yet you still wear the thread of the idol-house of time. You are still bound by the routines of the age, when love asks you to break free of them.

کاوش انجامkaawish-e-anjaamنتیجے کی فکر (anxiety about the outcome)
In plain English
When I make the excuse of abstinence, the cup-bearer says angrily: your heart is still worried about how things will end. In the classical image, the cup-bearer offers the wine of love, and refusing it shows fear of the consequences.

In plain English
Constant effort is the scale on which the quantity and quality of life are weighed, but you still measure life by counting mornings and evenings. Life's worth lies in what you do, not in how long you live.

In plain English
O spring cloud, how long will you give only a little dew? The tulips of my mountains still hold empty cups. The tulip's cup-shaped flower waits for rain; the poet asks for more than a trickle of grace for his people.

عجمajamغیر عرب، خاص طور پر ایران (the non-Arab world, Persia)
In plain English
The cup-bearers are Persian, but my wine is Arabian; the drinkers still hesitate at my cup. The image says Iqbal's message comes from the original Arabian source of faith, while his audience is used to a Persian style of thought.

In plain English
The morning breeze has brought news of Iqbal from the garden: the newly caught bird is still fluttering beneath the net. In the closing couplet the poet pictures himself as a captured bird still struggling, his spirit not yet broken.
