In plain English
A house comes alive only when something is happening in it; let it be a lament if not a wedding song. Silence is worse than sorrow; any sound of life is better than emptiness.
This couplet is by Mirza Ghalib, from the ghazal “na hui gar mere marne se tasalli na sahi”, Divan-e-Ghalib (Urdu), the Berlin edition (1925), p. 160. It means: A house comes alive only when something is happening in it; let it be a lament if not a wedding song. Silence is worse than sorrow; any sound of life is better than emptiness.
