dekh kar us but-e-kaafir ke sitamae zafar mujh ko khudaa yaad aayaa
بت کافرbut-e-kaafirسنگ دل محبوب (لفظی: بے دین بت) (the cruel beloved (literally: the infidel idol))
ستمsitamظلم (cruelty)
خدا یاد آیاkhudaa yaad aayaaخدا کی پناہ مانگی؛ نیز خدا کی طرف رجوع ہوا (cried out to God; turned to God)
آسان تشریح
اے ظفر، اس کافر بت کے ستم دیکھ کر مجھے خدا یاد آ گیا۔ محبوب کو بت اور کافر کہا ہے؛ لطف یہ ہے کہ بت کا ظلم ہی شاعر کو خدا کی طرف لے گیا۔ “خدا یاد آنا” سخت مصیبت میں پڑنے کا محاورہ بھی ہے۔
In plain English
Zafar, seeing the cruelties of that faithless idol, I remembered God. The beloved is called an idol (but) and an unbeliever (kaafir); the irony is that the idol's cruelty sends the poet back to God. “Khudaa yaad aanaa” is also an idiom for being in desperate trouble.
یہ شعر بہادر شاہ ظفر کا ہے، ان کی غزل «دہن تنگ جو یاد آیا مجھے» سے، کلیاتِ ظفر (1918)، ص 14۔This couplet is by Bahadur Shah Zafar, from the ghazal “dahan-e-tang jo yaad aayaa mujhe”, Kulliyat-e-Zafar (the four diwans) (1918), p. 14. It means: Zafar, seeing the cruelties of that faithless idol, I remembered God. The beloved is called an idol (but) and an unbeliever (kaafir); the irony is that the idol's cruelty sends the poet back to God. “Khudaa yaad aanaa” is also an idiom for being in desperate trouble.
