In plain English
Those from whom I hoped for sympathy for my wounds turned out to be even more wounded by cruelty than I was. Everyone is suffering; those we turn to for comfort often need comfort themselves.
This couplet is by Mirza Ghalib, from the ghazal “hazaaron khwaahishen aisi ki har khwaahish pe dam nikle”, Divan-e-Ghalib (Urdu), the Berlin edition (1925), p. 205. It means: Those from whom I hoped for sympathy for my wounds turned out to be even more wounded by cruelty than I was. Everyone is suffering; those we turn to for comfort often need comfort themselves.
