Kabhi Ae Haqeeqat-e-muntazar Nazar Aa Libaas-e-majaaz Mein · Ghazal by Allama Muhammad Iqbal
One of Iqbal's best-known ghazals, from the third part of Bang-e-Dra: a longing to see the hidden Truth in a visible form.
This ghazal is by Allama Muhammad Iqbal, from Bang-e-Dra (second printing) (1926), p. 320, 321.
kabhi ae haqeeqat-e-muntazar nazar aa libaas-e-majaaz meinki hazaaron sajde tarap rahe hain miri jabeen-e-niyaaz mein
لباس مجازlibaas-e-majaazظاہری صورت (the garb of the visible world)
In plain English
O long-awaited Truth, appear for once in a visible form, because thousands of prostrations are restless in my humble forehead. The poet longs to see God, whom he cannot see, so that he can bow before Him.

tarab-aashna-e-kharosh ho tu nawa hai mehram-e-gosh howoh surood kya ki chhupa hua ho sukoot-e-parda-e-saaz mein
پردۂ سازparda-e-saazساز کا پردہ، تار (the fret of an instrument)
In plain English
Let your melody find joy in being heard aloud and reach the ear; what use is a song that stays hidden in the silence of the instrument? Feeling and talent should be expressed, not locked away.

tu bacha bacha ke na rakh ise tira aaina hai woh aainaki shikasta ho to azeez-tar hai nigaah-e-aaina-saaz mein
آئنہaainaآئینہ، یہاں دل (mirror (here: the heart))
آئنہ سازaaina-saazآئینہ بنانے والا، یعنی خالق (the mirror-maker, the Creator)
In plain English
Do not keep it carefully protected; your mirror is the kind that, when broken, becomes even dearer in the eyes of its maker. The mirror is the heart: a heart broken in love is more precious to God.
نوٹ: The print spells آئنہ (as the metre needs) rather than آئینہ.

حکایت سوزhikaayat-e-sozجلنے کی کہانی (the tale of burning)
حدیث گدازhadees-e-gudaazپگھلنے کی بات (the story of melting)
In plain English
While circling the candle, the moth said: that old power is gone, neither in your story of burning nor in my tale of melting. The candle and the moth, classic symbols of love, admit that love has lost its old intensity.

بندہ نوازbanda-nawaazبندوں پر مہربان (kind to (Your) servants)
In plain English
My wretched sins found refuge nowhere in the world; and when they did find refuge, where was it? In Your forgiveness, which is kind to Your servants. The only shelter for a sinner is God's mercy.

(Ayaz, Mahmud's devoted servant)
In plain English
Love has lost its warmth and beauty its charm; Mahmud of Ghazni no longer feels that longing, and Ayaz's curls have lost their curve. Mahmud and his devoted servant Ayaz are a famous pair in Persian and Urdu poetry, standing for love and loyalty; the poet says that bond has faded.

In plain English
Whenever I bowed down in prayer, a voice rose from the earth: your heart is attached to idols, so what will you gain from prayer? Worship without a sincere heart is empty; the 'idols' are the worldly things the heart is attached to.
