In plain English
Whenever I bowed down in prayer, a voice rose from the earth: your heart is attached to idols, so what will you gain from prayer? Worship without a sincere heart is empty; the 'idols' are the worldly things the heart is attached to.
This couplet is by Allama Muhammad Iqbal, from the ghazal “kabhi ae haqeeqat-e-muntazar nazar aa libaas-e-majaaz mein”, Bang-e-Dra (second printing) (1926), p. 321. It means: Whenever I bowed down in prayer, a voice rose from the earth: your heart is attached to idols, so what will you gain from prayer? Worship without a sincere heart is empty; the 'idols' are the worldly things the heart is attached to.
