In plain English
With dark humour the poet calls death a loyal friend. He keeps death close, he says, because a friend who arrives in hard times is the one who is truly useful. For a lover in endless pain, death is the only visitor who brings relief.
This couplet is by Dagh Dehlvi, from the ghazal “le chalaa jaan meri rooth ke jaanaa tera”, Mahtab-e-Dagh (Dagh’s third diwan) (1893), p. 14. It means: With dark humour the poet calls death a loyal friend. He keeps death close, he says, because a friend who arrives in hard times is the one who is truly useful. For a lover in endless pain, death is the only visitor who brings relief.
