In plain English
The beloved tries to make the poet jealous by meeting his rival. He refuses to be hurt: if we have no relationship, why should your meeting someone else upset me? By God, your attempts to make me cry only make me laugh. The bravado itself shows how much he still cares.
This couplet is by Dagh Dehlvi, from the ghazal “le chalaa jaan meri rooth ke jaanaa tera”, Mahtab-e-Dagh (Dagh’s third diwan) (1893), p. 14. It means: The beloved tries to make the poet jealous by meeting his rival. He refuses to be hurt: if we have no relationship, why should your meeting someone else upset me? By God, your attempts to make me cry only make me laugh. The bravado itself shows how much he still cares.
