Tha Musta'aar Husn Se Us Ke Jo Noor Tha · Ghazal by Mir Taqi Mir
The first ghazal of Mir's first diwan.
This ghazal is by Mir Taqi Mir, from Kulliyat-e-Mir (ba-tarteeb-e-jadeed, with introduction and glossary) (1941), p. 2.
tha musta'aar husn se us ke jo noor thakhursheed mein bhi us hi ka zarra zuhoor tha
In plain English
All the light in the world was borrowed from the beloved's beauty. Even the sun shone only because a tiny speck of that beauty showed itself in it. The opening couplet makes the sun, the biggest source of light we know, a borrower.

pahuncha jo aap ko to main pahuncha khuda ke tainmaaloom ab hua ki bahut main bhi door tha
آپ کوaap koاپنے آپ تک، اپنی ذات تک (to my own self)
In plain English
When I finally reached my own self, I found I had reached God. Only now do I see how far I had been, not just from God, but from myself. The couplet says that knowing yourself truly is the road to knowing God.

ham khaak mein mile to mile lekin ae sipahrus shokh ko bhi raah pe laana zaroor tha
خاک میں ملےkhaak mein mileبرباد ہو گئے، مٹ گئے (were ruined, turned to dust)
سپہرsipahrآسمان، تقدیر (the sky; fate)
شوخshokhشریر، چنچل (یہاں محبوب) (playful, mischievous one (the beloved))
راہ پہ لاناraah pe laanaسیدھے راستے پر لانا، مہربان کرنا (to bring round, to make kind)
In plain English
The lover speaks to fate: fine, we were ruined, so be it. But you should at least have softened the heart of that playful beloved too. He accepts his own loss and only complains that the beloved stayed unchanged.

In plain English
This couplet and the next form a short story (qita). Yesterday my foot struck a skull lying on the road, and that bone was completely broken to pieces. The scene is set for what the skull says next.
Couplets 8 and 9 form a qita (a two-couplet unit); read them together.

In plain English
The skull said: watch where you walk, careless one. I too was once someone's proud head. Every proud person ends as dust under other people's feet, so pride is foolish.
Second couplet of the qita that begins at couplet 8.

حور بہشتیhoor-e-bihishtiجنت کی حور (a houri of paradise)
In plain English
Mir says the one whose beauty even the houris of paradise envied was living among us all along. If we did not recognise it, the fault was in our understanding. We often look far away for what is already close.
