Jawaab-e-shikwa — The Answer to the Complaint · Nazm by Allama Muhammad Iqbal
Iqbal's reply to his own Shikwa, in which the answer comes from heaven. We carry the first stanza and the last stanza, in that order; the numbers here count our selection. Shikwa and Jawab-e-Shikwa are written in six-line stanzas (musaddas); each stanza is shown here as three two-line units.
This nazm is by Allama Muhammad Iqbal, from Bang-e-Dra (second printing) (1926), p. 220, 232.

In plain English
Words that come from the heart have power; they have no wings, yet they can fly. This is why the poet's complaint, spoken sincerely, rose all the way to heaven.

Such words are heavenly in origin and always look upward; they rise from the dust and make their way to the skies. A sincere voice from earth reaches heaven.

Reason is your shield and love is your sword, my dervish; your rightful leadership can win the world. The answer turns into encouragement: reason protects, but love is what acts.
