Hai Justujoo Ke Khoob Se Hai Khoob-tar Kahaan · Ghazal by Altaf Hussain Hali

Hali’s most quoted ghazal, printed complete across pages 87 and 88. Its opening couplet is a motto for anyone who keeps searching for something better.

This ghazal is by Altaf Hussain Hali, from Diwan-e-Hali (qitas, ghazals, qasidas, marsiyas, rubais) (1922), p. 87, 88.

hai justujoo ke khoob se hai khoob-tar kahaanab thahrti hai dekhiye jaa kar nazar kahaan

  • ٹھہرتی thahrtiرکتی، جم جاتی (comes to rest, settles)

In plain English

The search goes on: where is something even finer than the fine? Let us see where the eye finally comes to rest. Hali describes a restless mind that is never satisfied with “good enough”. Students often quote it about ambition and the pursuit of excellence.

hain daur-e-jaam-e-awwal-e-shab mein khudi se doorhoti hai aaj dekhiye ham ko sahar kahaan

  • دور جام daur-e-jaamشراب کے پیالے کا گردش میں آنا (the passing round of the wine cup)
  • اول شب awwal-e-shabرات کا شروع (the start of the night)
  • خودی khudiاپنا ہوش (self-awareness, one’s own self)

In plain English

Only the first round of the cup has gone round, early in the night, and already we are beyond ourselves. Who knows where we will be when morning comes. Read simply, it pictures a gathering that has carried the poet away; it is also an image of being overwhelmed very early by love or ecstasy.

ya rab is ikhtilaat kaa anjaam ho ba-khairtha us ko ham se rabt magar is qadar kahaan

  • انجام anjaamنتیجہ، آخر (the outcome, the end)

In plain English

The beloved is suddenly very friendly, and the poet is worried rather than happy. O God, he prays, may this closeness end well; she was attached to us before, but never this much. Experience has taught him that sudden warmth can be a sign of trouble ahead.

ik umr chaahiye ke gawaaraa ho nesh-e-ishqrakkhi hai aaj lazzat-e-zakhm-e-jigar kahaan

  • نیش عشق nesh-e-ishqعشق کا ڈنک (the sting of love)
  • لذت lazzatمزا (pleasure, relish)
  • زخم جگر zakhm-e-jigarدل و جگر کا زخم (a wound of the heart)

In plain English

It takes a lifetime before the sting of love becomes bearable. Today, a beginner cannot yet taste the strange sweetness of a wounded heart. Hali says that the deeper pleasures of love, like the pleasures of any hard discipline, come only with time and endurance.

bas ho chukaa bayaan kasal-o-ranj-e-raah kaakhat kaa mere jawaab hai ae naama-bar kahaan

  • رنج راہ ranj-e-raahسفر کی تکلیف (the hardships of the road)

In plain English

The messenger has come back and is going on about how tiring the journey was. Enough about your weariness, the poet says; where is the answer to my letter? His impatience is the whole point: he cares only for a word from the beloved.

kaun-o-makaan se hai dil-e-wahshi kinaara-geeris khaanumaan-kharaab ne dhoondaa hai ghar kahaan

  • کون و مکاں kaun-o-makaanساری کائنات (the whole universe, being and place)

In plain English

The wild heart keeps itself apart from the entire universe. Where, then, has this homeless thing found itself a home? The answer is left open: perhaps in the beloved, perhaps in God, but certainly not in the world.

ham jis pe mar rahe hain woh hai baat hi kuchh auraalam mein tujh se laakh sahi tu magar kahaan

  • مر رہے ہیں mar rahe hainجان دیتے ہیں، شیدا ہیں (are dying for, are crazy about)
  • عالم aalamدنیا (the world)
  • لاکھ laakhبہت سے (a hundred thousand, countless)

In plain English

What we are dying for is something quite different, the poet tells the beloved. The world may have countless people like you, but where is another you? Beauty can be found everywhere; the particular person one loves cannot be replaced.

hoti nahin qubool duaa tark-e-ishq kidil chaahtaa na ho to zabaan mein asar kahaan

In plain English

I pray to be free of love, but the prayer is never granted. The reason is simple: if the heart does not really want something, the tongue’s words have no power. Hali makes a sharp point about sincerity: a prayer said only with the lips is empty.

haali nishaat-e-naghma-o-mai dhoondte ho abaae ho waqt-e-subh rahe raat bhar kahaan

In plain English

In the maqta Hali teases himself: now you come looking for the joy of music and wine, Hali? You have arrived at dawn, when the party is over. Where were you all night? It is a gentle lesson about wasted youth: the time for some things passes, and arriving late means missing them.
