In plain English
The poet praises God as free of every flaw, and the proud beloved (called an “idol” in Urdu poetry) feels challenged. She says: you might at least have found some flaw in me first. In other words, “I am just as flawless; find a fault in me if you can.” The joke is the beloved’s vanity.
This couplet is by Dagh Dehlvi, from the ghazal “ghair kaa main bhi agar chaahne waalaa hota”, Mahtab-e-Dagh (Dagh’s third diwan) (1893), p. 10. It means: The poet praises God as free of every flaw, and the proud beloved (called an “idol” in Urdu poetry) feels challenged. She says: you might at least have found some flaw in me first. In other words, “I am just as flawless; find a fault in me if you can.” The joke is the beloved’s vanity.
