ghair kaa main bhi agar chaahne waalaa hotadhang is chaah kaa duniyaa se niraalaa hota
غیرghairدوسرا، اجنبی؛ رقیب (someone else; the rival)
نرالاniraalaaانوکھا، سب سے الگ (unique, unlike any other)
In plain English
If I had loved someone other than you, the poet says, my way of loving would still have been unlike anyone else’s in the world. It is a boast about the depth of his love: the fault is not in his loving, but in the one he loves.
qais ko aabla-e-paa se hua kya haasilpaanw mein naaqa-e-lailaa ke bhi chhaalaa hota
(Qais, the real name of Majnun)
آبلۂ پاaabla-e-paaپاؤں کا چھالا (a blister on the foot)
(Laila’s she-camel)
In plain English
Majnun (Qais) wandered the desert after Laila until his feet blistered. What did he gain from those blisters, the poet asks? The real success would have been if Laila’s camel had blistered its feet too, that is, if the beloved had also suffered on the way to him. Love should hurt both sides.
teesha-e-farhaad ne bekaar sambhaalaa ae ishqkaam bantaa jo zaraa dil ko sambhaalaa hota
(Farhad’s pickaxe)
In plain English
Farhad cut through a mountain with his pickaxe to win Shirin, and died in the attempt. The poet says, O Love, he took up that axe for nothing; if he had only held his heart steady, the work would have been done. The wordplay on “sambhaalna” (to take up a tool, to keep one’s heart under control) suggests that self-control is harder and more useful than heroic effort.

ہجر کی شبhijr ki shabجدائی کی رات (the night of separation)
تقدیرtaqdeerقسمت (fate, destiny)
بلاbalaaمصیبت (calamity)
تدبیرtadbeerکوشش، حل (a plan, a remedy)
In plain English
The poet speaks to Fate: the night of separation was not the Day of Judgement, which no one can stop. It was only an ordinary disaster, so you could have found some way to avoid it. It is a gentle reproach that Fate did not even try.

بتbutمورتی؛ مراد حسین محبوب (idol; here, the beautiful beloved)
In plain English
The poet praises God as free of every flaw, and the proud beloved (called an “idol” in Urdu poetry) feels challenged. She says: you might at least have found some flaw in me first. In other words, “I am just as flawless; find a fault in me if you can.” The joke is the beloved’s vanity.
dard-e-furqat ki khatak wasl mein kya mit jaatiaah thamti agar ae daagh to naalaa hota
درد فرقتdard-e-furqatجدائی کا درد (the pain of separation)
وصلwaslملاقات، ملن (union with the beloved)
In plain English
Even when the lovers meet, the old sting of separation does not disappear. If my sigh stopped, Dagh, it would only turn into a lament. Union does not cure the wound; the sorrow simply changes its form.
