go hukm tere laakhon yaan taalte rahe hainlekin talaa na hargiz dil se khayaal tera
گوgoاگرچہ (although)
ہرگزhargizکبھی بھی (ever, at all)
In plain English
Although people here have disobeyed Your commands countless times, they have never been able to put the thought of You out of their hearts. Hali admits human weakness honestly, but says that faith remains even in those who fail to live up to it.
نوٹ: The words “ٹالتے” (put off) and “ٹلا” (was put off) are a deliberate play on the same verb.
This couplet is by Altaf Hussain Hali, from the ghazal “kamaal hai jo azal se woh hai kamaal tera”, Diwan-e-Hali (qitas, ghazals, qasidas, marsiyas, rubais) (1922), p. 43. It means: Although people here have disobeyed Your commands countless times, they have never been able to put the thought of You out of their hearts. Hali admits human weakness honestly, but says that faith remains even in those who fail to live up to it.
