دمdamسانس؛ تلوار کی دھار (breath; also the edge of a blade)
In plain English
Look at the uncontrollable force of longing: even the sword's breath, its sharp edge, has come out of its chest. The edge sticks out from the body of the sword as if the sword itself were eager to strike the lover. 'Dam' means both breath and blade-edge, and the poet uses both meanings.
This couplet is by Mirza Ghalib, from the ghazal “naqsh faryaadi hai kis ki shokhi-e-tahreer ka”, Divan-e-Ghalib (Urdu), the Berlin edition (1925), p. 1. It means: Look at the uncontrollable force of longing: even the sword's breath, its sharp edge, has come out of its chest. The edge sticks out from the body of the sword as if the sword itself were eager to strike the lover. 'Dam' means both breath and blade-edge, and the poet uses both meanings.
