asar us ko zaraa nahin hotaranj raahat-fazaa nahin hota
In plain English
My laments have no effect on the beloved at all. And grief, which is sometimes said to bring a strange comfort to lovers, gives me none. The opening couplet sets the mood: pain without result and without relief.

be-wafaa kehne ki shikaayat haito bhi waada wafaa nahin hota
In plain English
The beloved complains when the lover calls them faithless. The lover answers: yet your promise is never kept either. A neat reply in conversational tone: if you dislike the name, stop earning it.

zikr-e-aghyaar se hua maaloomharf-e-naaseh buraa nahin hota
ذکر اغیارzikr-e-aghyaarرقیبوں کا تذکرہ (talk of the rivals)
ناصحnaasehنصیحت کرنے والا (one who gives advice)
In plain English
Hearing the beloved talk of the rivals, I finally understood that the adviser's words were not so bad after all. The naseh had warned the lover to give up this love; only the pain of hearing rivals praised made that advice seem sensible.

tum hamaare kisi tarah na huewarna duniyaa mein kya nahin hota
کسی طرحkisi tarahکسی بھی طریقے سے (in any way at all)
In plain English
You did not become mine, whatever I tried; otherwise, what is impossible in this world? Everything can happen, except the one thing the lover wanted. The simple words make the disappointment feel complete.

In plain English
Go on testing me; until it is tested, longing does not show its full strength. The lover welcomes the beloved's harshness, because hardship is what proves how strong love is.

tum mere paas hote ho goyaajab koi doosraa nahin hota
گویاgoyaaجیسے، مانو (as if, as though)
In plain English
When no one else is with me, it is as if you are with me. In solitude the lover's mind turns wholly to the beloved, so the absent one feels present. A second reading is also loved: when nobody else is in my heart, you are there. The couplet is famous for saying so much with so few, simple words.
نوٹ: The print spells ہوتی ہو in the old style; modernised to ہوتے ہو.

haal-e-dil yaar ko likhoon kyoonkarhaath dil se judaa nahin hota
حال دلhaal-e-dilدل کی کیفیت (the state of the heart)
کیونکرkyoonkarکیسے (how)
In plain English
How can I write my heart's state to my beloved, when my hand never leaves my heart? The lover keeps pressing his hand to his aching heart, so it is never free to hold a pen. A playful image of pain that leaves no room even to describe itself.

rahm bar khasm-e-jaan-e-ghair na hosab kaa dil ek saa nahin hota
غیرghairرقیب (the rival)
In plain English
May you not show mercy to my rival, the enemy of my life; not every heart is the same. The lover asks the beloved to keep kindness for the true lover alone, since the rival's heart is not as sincere as his.

چارۂ دلchaara-e-dilدل کا علاج (cure for the heart)
In plain English
There is no cure for the heart except patience, and patience is impossible without you. The wordplay on “sivaa” (except, without) closes the circle: the only cure needs the very person who is missing.
